Urbanization Processes at Work: Mobility and Local Development in Hanoi
Funded by the International Initiatives Fund of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, with Jean-Pierre Collin, Julie-Anne Boudreau, Mélanie Robertson, Ha Huu Nga and Nguyen Duc Truyen of the Sustainable Development Institute for the North (SDIN) of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS)
In this research project, our goal is to understand, through the study of two communities living in the suburbs of Hanoi (An Khanh and Trieu Khuc), the impact of the process of urbanization on: 1) living conditions; 2) perceptions of urbanization; 3) the institutions of the State and of civil society. We seek to develop a socio-anthropological understanding of the impact of this urban transition on the life of individuals, on their modes of subsistence, on the relationship that they have with the authorities, their behaviours, and their social relations with migrants. Three main research questions structure this project: 1) How do individuals adapt socially, economically and culturally to these profound changes? 2) Did changes in the strategy of the State – from a negative to a positive projection of urbanization, as an efficient strategy to stimulate economic development and thus “modernise” itself – have an impact on the way individuals perceive urbanization? And 3) In the goal of establishing regulation schemes appropriate for confronting increasing rural/urban interrelations, do we see new institutions or organizations emerge from civil society?
